Can you explain what the phrase Sun People means? I tried to research it online but only found that it's a reference to African Americans.

It is all explained quite concisely, right here.
Sun People are those with roots in the world's southern cradle. They are warm, sharing, kind, and open. Ice people are the ones who are cold, stingy, and cruel.
African Americans are Sun People. And in my view, so are Muslims.
The hungry-Che guy is my favourite, but they are all pretty good photos.
